Can A Chiropractor Help With Scoliosis?

You glance in the mirror and realize you’re off-balance, one shoulder significantly higher than the other. Your shirt looks skewed. Every morning, that ache in your back welcomes you to consciousness, sometimes a dull ache, other times a searing pain, but always there.

Sitting through long meetings, trying to keep up with your kids as they play – both actions cause you pain and exhaustion. That X-ray your doctor showed you, the side-ways bend, and one word…scoliosis.

Will it always run your life? Surgery is terrifying, and what are your options besides the operating room? Can a chiropractor help scoliosis? The answer is yes! Chiropractors can manage scoliosis through spinal adjustments, pain management, and rehabilitative exercises.

They can’t “cure” scoliosis and straighten the curve of your spine. However, they can manage pain and increase mobility so you can live the life you know you’re missing out on!

Understanding Scoliosis Basics

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of your spine. Instead of being straight, your spine is shaped like an S or a C. A doctor will measure the curve in degrees by taking an X-ray of your spine. If the curve is 10degrees or more, it is considered scoliosis.

Three types can affect people. Idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type, occurring without a known cause, and affects 80% of people. It typically occurs during adolescence. Congenital scoliosis is present at birth when the spine develops incorrectly. Neuromuscular scoliosis is caused by conditions such as Muscular Dystrophy or Cerebral Palsy.

You may observe some warning indicators, such as asymmetry of the shoulders or shoulder blades. One hip appears more prominent than the other. The waist is uneven. Uneven fit of clothing on your body. Physical indicators often precede pain.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Ongoing back pain

  • Muscle tightness and stiffness

  • Difficulty bending or twisting normally

  • Musculoskeletal asymmetry

Some experience breathing or digestive issues if the pain is severe enough. Because compensating muscles work harder, fatigue can be apparent.

Scoliosis occurs mostly in adolescents, ages 10-15, during rapid growth. It occurs more frequently in girls than in boys. In adults, scoliosis can result from ageing and degenerative changes in the spine. There are 6-9 million Americans with scoliosis.

Can scoliosis be cured? No. Scoliosis is a permanent curve in the spine. The curve cannot be ‘fixed’. Successful treatment can ensure the curve does not worsen and that symptoms are controlled. Many people with scoliosis go on to live healthy, pain-free lives.

How Chiropractors Help With Scoliosis?

Chiropractic treatment of scoliosis is quite specific. Chiropractors focus on improving the structural integrity and functionality of your spine. They don’t deal with your scoliosis as a medical doctor would. Instead, chiropractors work to optimize the function and movement of the spine.

By caring for your body through chiropractic care, you can aim for the following outcomes. They will be magnified with each visit you receive.

  • Reduce chronic muscle spasms and long-term pain.

  • Improve flexibility and spinal mobility.

  • Strengthen supporting musculature.

  • Improve posture and body mechanics.

  • Enhance your quality of life.

Understanding limitations is just as important. Will a chiropractor permanently fix scoliosis? No. A chiropractor can’t get rid of spinal curves. Nor can chiropractors correct structural problems such as deformities or replace surgery when needed. Having realistic expectations of what treatment will do can lead to greater patient satisfaction.

Certain patients are best suited to chiropractic treatment for scoliosis. Someone with a curve of less than 40 degrees (mild or moderate) is generally considered a good candidate for chiropractic care. Someone with restricted movement, pain, and stiffness would also benefit greatly. Patients looking to avoid drugs and surgery can find relief with this form of treatment, as well as adults and children.

Scoliosis chiropractic treatment is far different from a general chiropractic visit. Your chiropractor will examine your specific spinal curve. They will note which vertebrae are out of alignment. They will determine the muscular imbalance caused by the curvature. Using this information, they will develop a custom treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Scoliosis treatment chiropractic care is not a “quick fix.” Be prepared for extensive treatment to maintain the results you achieve. Your chiropractor will be an active participant in maintaining your spinal health for months and years.

5 Ways Chiropractic Treatment Helps Scoliosis Patients

Here are five scientifically proven methods that chiropractors can utilize. They can help patients with scoliosis have a more functional lifestyle.

Spinal Adjustments and Realignment

The first of these scientifically proven methods is the spinal or chiropractic adjustment. It is a hand-applied treatment. During chiropractic adjustments, the chiropractor applies controlled, directed force to the area requiring adjustment. They will also manually manipulate your joints to restore your range of motion.

Chiropractic adjustment does not actually ‘line up’ your spine. It regains motion to the vertebrae so that nerves aren’t pinched, and your muscles aren’t spasming. Adjustments usually take 15 to 30 minutes. They are generally well tolerated by most patients and produce an immediate, noticeable change.

 Pain Control

Most patients with scoliosis see a chiropractor for pain management. Because your spinal curve is uneven, chronic muscles are spasming constantly, which will lead to chronic pain. The treatment method chiropractors use to combat the pain is spinal manipulation, soft-tissue work, joint manipulation, and exercise therapy.

Seeking a non-drug method for controlling your pain? Then this could be the treatment for you! Side effect-free! The technique uses ice, heat, electrical stimulation, and ultrasound. Most patients will experience a 50% or greater reduction in pain within two to four weeks.

Postural Training and Correction

Scoliosis can also result in tight muscles and painful joints. Your chiropractor can advise on posture while sitting, sleeping, or standing. These exercises should take no more than 15 minutes a day to improve your posture. Good posture brings numerous benefits.

Fatigue is reduced by the end of the day, mobility improves, and digestive function and breathing may also improve.

Muscle Rehabilitation

The muscle imbalances seen with scoliosis are quite distinctive. The muscles on the convex side will be weak and lengthened. As chiropractors aim to heal a knee problem by treating the entire body, scoliosis treatment will consider your entire musculoskeletal system. In scoliosis, muscles on the concave side of the curve will be short and tight.

Tight muscles are lengthened by stretching, and an exercise program can strengthen weak muscles. Special emphasis must be placed on core strength. Strong, balanced abdominal and back muscles support the spine. Most people regain strength within 6-8 weeks.

Scoliosis is for life. It is about managing the condition. Your chiropractor will document pain, spinal range of motion, muscle power, and the size of the curve. This approach is modified over time, as progress is achieved.

To start, treatment twice/three times per week, then weekly, and then maintain for 4 weeks. So that problems are detected early on.

Different Chiropractic Methods for Scoliosis

There are several specialized chiropractic approaches to manage scoliosis. Each is effective in its own right, and each offers distinct benefits.

Traditional Chiropractic Care

Many chiropractors provide typical spinal-manipulation-focused treatment. Your chiropractor performs hands-on adjustments to optimize joint function. This treatment modality is often effective for mild scoliosis with few symptoms.

The goal is pain control and increased mobility, not necessarily curve reduction. This method is less costly and less time-intensive.

Chiropractic Leadership-Educational Advancement-Research

CLEAR protocol uses scoliosis-specific treatment. The CLEAR protocol stands for Chiropractic Leadership, Educational Advancement, and Research. Certified physicians undertake many hours of scoliosis-specific training. The technique uses a series of adjustments, equipment-driven exercises, and specific traction.

The goal of the CLEAR protocol is to reduce scoliosis measurements and improve function. The technique is excellent for moderate curves in motivated individuals who are prepared to commit a sizable amount of time.

Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP)

CBP focuses on achieving a “textbook” spinal line with appropriate spinal curves. The spinal line radiates from the midline and is perpendicular to the ground. Specialized mirror-image adjustments are used. They apply a force directly opposite to the direction of the curve. In addition, spinal traction devices are used long-term to help elongate your spine.

CBP requires rigorous, high-frequency treatment. This technique would appeal to patients seeking the most drastic possible reduction in their curve. Also, those with the time and resources to commit to frequent visits stand to benefit.

How to Pick One to Treat Scoliosis?

Selection of the right approach. For mild curves (10-25 degrees), most people use the conventional approach. For curves of 25-40 degrees, the CLEAR or CBP protocols can be considered. Other influencing factors include your age. While growing teens often do well on specialized protocols, was your goal symptom reduction or curve reduction?

Your finances and time constraints come into play. Typically, a chiropractic appointment costs $50-100. A specialized protocol can cost anywhere from $150 to $ 300. Insurance coverage will depend. Specialized protocols require more frequent treatment over longer time frames. Be honest and practical about your finances and time constraints in making a decision.

A good chiropractor will make an informed decision about what treatment would be most appropriate for you. They will carefully assess your curve type, its severity, your age, pain, goals, resources, and other factors. Others, ‘mix & match’—flexible care tailored to each individual.

Expected Outcomes from Chiropractic Care

Realistic results help you assess treatment. Chiropractic care yields consistent results for most people with scoliosis:

Pain Decreases:

This occurs most reliably, with studies showing improvement in 60-80% of patients. Many patients experience a 50%+ reduction in pain within 8-12 weeks, and some feel completely pain-free. Discontinuing medications is also a health benefit, as they can cause side effects.

Mobility Increases :

Patients report being able to move with more ease (bending, twisting, and reaching) within 6-12 weeks of continued care. Everyday activities, such as driving, dressing, and exercising, become much easier.

Function:

Every part of a person’s life improves. People sleep better, participate more fully in work and leisure, and are less physically restricted, resume old activities, and are more independent.

Better Quality of Life:

Quality of life often improves beyond patients’ expectations. Lower pain levels lift the spirits, increased function increases independence, and corrected posture increases confidence. Many patients state they feel younger. These benefits can be very rewarding.

Curve Measurements Are Inconsistent:

Some patients report a 2-5-degree reduction in curvature, while others stabilize and show no measurable curvature progression. Some individuals will report no change in curvature despite the above symptoms. A significant reduction in curves is unlikely with chiropractic care alone.

Treatment Time Varies:

Milder curves typically respond more quickly than more advanced curves. Young patients respond faster than adults. People who are already exercising will see greater functional gains, and those who follow home exercise plans will perform better. Assume a slow but steady 3-6 month progression.

Consider Other Approaches:

If a person experiences any of the following symptoms: increased curvature after care; no improvement in pain after 12 weeks of treatment; any numbness, tingling, or weakness; deteriorating quality of life; or emerging breathing and digestive issues, a consultation with medical professionals is recommended.

How Chiropractic Compares To Other Options?

Chiropractic

Mild-moderate curves, pain management, and improving mobility

Doesn't correct severe curves, requires ongoing visits

Physical Therapy

Strengthening, flexibility, and postural training

Requires high commitment, slower pain relief

Bracing

Growing children, preventing curve progression

Must wear 18-23 hours daily, uncomfortable

Surgery

Severe curves over 40-50 degrees

Invasive, 6-12 month recovery, surgical risks

Chiropractic care works effectively on its own for mild cases. Moderate cases often benefit from combining chiropractic with physical therapy. Surgery remains the last resort for severe cases.

Is Chiropractic Care Right For Your Scoliosis?

There are signs that you’d benefit from chiropractic treatment for scoliosis; use them to determine if this approach is right for your specific situation.

  • Chiropractic care for scoliosis is most effective for individuals with a curve between 10 and 40 degrees. Regular, consistent back pain or muscle tightness. Desire to delay or prevent surgery. Preference for drug-free and hands-on pain management.

  • An interest in improving overall function and quality of life. Willingness to commit to ongoing care. Most individuals who fit these criteria will experience remarkable improvements.

  • Chiropractic care for scoliosis is most effective for individuals with idiopathic scoliosis (scoliosis with an unknown cause). This includes both adolescents and adults. Chiropractic treatment may also be beneficial for older adults who have experienced age-related spinal deterioration.

  • Neuromuscular scoliosis, which has specific underlying causes that must be addressed individually, requires careful evaluation and may need modification.

  • Chiropractors treat individuals of all ages with scoliosis. For children and adolescents, chiropractic treatment may help limit curve progression as the spine grows.

  • For adults and seniors, treatment may help improve function and mobility.

Red Flags to Look Out For Before Starting Chiropractic Care for Scoliosis

We have highlighted the key red flags. They require immediate medical attention before starting chiropractic care. Look out for them and call for help at once if you relate to any of these.

  1. Sudden or severe pain that doesn’t respond to conventional methods: You may struggle with numbness or tingling in the legs and issues with balance and walking. Also, there’s a loss of bladder and bowel control or any curve over 40 degrees.

  2. Before considering any new treatment, you should be assessed by an orthopedist.

  3. Look for experience and expertise in chiropractic: Choosing the right chiropractor can make a difference. Those who specialize in scoliosis will use specific techniques adapted to your individual condition.

  4. The CLEAR certification and CBP training indicate greater experience treating scoliosis. Refer to patient reviews, patient testimonials, and ask about the chiropractor’s success with specific curve types and magnitudes.

  5. Consultation before treatment is essential: Ask how to choose the right chiropractor and schedule a consultation before beginning treatment. Bring your current X-rays, describe your history of scoliosis, and current symptoms.

  6. Ensure your chiropractor communicates openly about their approach and manages expectations.

  7. During a consultation, inquire about the chiropractor’s monthly patient volume of individuals with scoliosis. Also, ask about the general treatment success rate for scoliosis. You can also find the anticipated treatment duration and appointment frequency.

  8. Learn about the cost of chiropractic care and whether your insurance will cover it, and exercises to do at home between appointments.

  9. Trust your instincts: Choose a chiropractor who listens to and understands your concerns. You’ll be working together long-term, so building that rapport will be crucial.

Common Questions about Chiropractic and Scoliosis

  1. Is Scoliosis Curable?

No. Scoliosis is incurable; it will be with you for your whole life. The good news is that your scoliosis can be managed very well. Treatments can prevent your scoliosis from worsening, alleviate discomfort, and help you maintain a high quality of life.

  1. Can A Chiropractor Straighten My Spine?

No chiropractor can permanently straighten a scoliotic spine. Chiropractic adjustments briefly realign a scoliotic spine and improve movement. A mild reduction of 2-5 degrees can be expected in some patients. The realistic goals are to reduce pain and increase mobility.

  1. How Often Should I See A Chiropractor For Scoliosis?

You will typically attend 2-3 visits per week for 4-8 weeks, gradually decreasing to once per week as your pain subsides. Typically, you would be scheduled for 1-2 maintenance visits per month going forward. Your chiropractor will adjust visits depending on how you are doing.

  1. Does Insurance Cover Chiropractic For Scoliosis?

Most plans cover 12 to 26 chiropractic visits per year. Most plans cover chiropractic care differently. Medicare covers chiropractic manipulation. Your insurance plan should be reviewed with your insurance provider to confirm coverage levels, copays, and prior authorization requirements.

  1. Is Chiropractic Safe For Children With Scoliosis?

Yes, chiropractic care is safe for children under the care of a licensed chiropractor. Treatments are adjusted for their smaller bodies using lighter techniques. Children respond particularly well to care during phases of rapid growth. Make sure you select a chiropractor with experience treating pediatric scoliosis.

Dr. Norgaard’s first exposure to chiropractic was when he was a high school football player at Neuqua Valley in Naperville, Illinois. Nagging injuries led him to Action Chiropractic and Dr. Durnas. He was amazed with the results he got and knew that the treatments provided at Action Chiropractic were the best way to address his ailments.
After high school, Dr. Norgaard left Naperville and attended Central College in Pella, Iowa. While at Central, he majored in biology and played football, further piquing his interest in sports injuries and how to treat them. When he wasn’t in the classroom or on the football field, Dr. Norgaard spent his time volunteering at hospitals, and at various clinics. This is when he really developed a passion for helping people get better.
His experiences as an athlete, chiropractic patient, and volunteer shaped his decision to become a chiropractor.
After graduating from Central, Dr. Norgaard continued his education at Palmer College of Chiropractic.
While at Palmer, Dr. Norgaard took several extracurricular courses focusing on spinal diagnosis and therapy, soft tissue care, and diagnosis and treatment of the extremities. He completed a 4-month internship with Dr. Durnas at Action Chiropractic and Sports Injury Center and further developed his skills as a physician.
He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Palmer in October of 2021 and received the Academic Excellence Award.
After graduation, Dr. Norgaard joined the team at Action Chiropractic and Sports Injury Center. He currently resides in the Naperville area with his wife, Shannon, son, Parker, and dog, Alby.
“I chose to become a chiropractor because I was helped by chiropractic. I was in such discomfort it took me over 3 minutes to put on my socks. After seeing a chiropractor, and regaining the ability to tie my shoes, I realized that taking loads of NSAIDs did not address the fact that there was something causing the pain. The more I learned about it, I found that Chiropractic doesn’t just hide symptoms, like I was trying to do with pills, it fixes the origin of the problem.”
Dr. Durnas graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology and Bachelors of Arts degree in Chemistry. After graduation he worked in research and development for 3 years and dabbled in powerlifting and professional wrestling. That’s what lead him to chiropractic school. While at Palmer College of Chiropractic, he focused on learning how to best help the athlete. He took several extracurricular courses on how to address soft tissue injuries, how to adjust extremities, and how to better manage sports injuries. He graduated in June of 2012, where we were the Palmer Clinical Excellence Award winner and a keynote speaker at commencement.
In 2019, Dr. Durnas earned his Diplomate from the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (DACBSP)®. He is only the 427th chiropractor in history to earn this designation, and only the 6th recipient in the history of Illinois. He completed over 300 hours of classroom and online courses focusing on in depth on the diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries, concussions, and emergency procedures, and had over 100 on the field hours with athletes that ranged from cross fitters, professional and high school football players, professional BMX and Motocross riders, triathletes, and runners. Dr. Durnas passed a 6-part practical exam and a 250 question Board exam and contributed a case study involving nerve damage in a professional athlete following a hit to the shoulder.
